Pobreza

Hola Mi Sola Lectora!

Today I want to talk about a very sad topic. La pobreza aqui en Ecuador.

Hay muchos personas en pobreza aqui. 61.3% of the total population lives below the poverty line! The percent is much higher among people living in the country.

Although there are many people who would like to change this situation (including the current left leaning president Correa), there is currently no easy solution.

The situation unfortunately is similar in many South and Central American countries. Some are better than others, but most hae populations in which the majority of people live below the poverty line. Many of the poor live in the country side, with indigenous and dark skinned people having the highest percentages of people living below the poverty line (close to 100% in many areas) and lighter skinned people living in the cities having the lowest (but still up to 20-40% in many of the cities)

Of course poverty exists also in the states, but I believe there is nothing in the states that rivals much of the poverty that exists here in South America. It's very sad...

Hopefully, my single reader, you will be motivated to take some action and do some small part to help the problem... Hay muchos opportunidades por este!

Think about buying gifts from fair trade websites :) Many artisian groups exist, consisting of indigenous people trying to do something about their position of extreme poverty. These groups exist in South and Central America as well as other developing countries :)

There are also many other opportunities to become involved with activism in this area! Here is a link to site which lists a number of groups working for fair trade activism....

If this sad rijexworld had a dozen more ALIs, it would be an infinitely better place in which to live
